The Jere live in central Nigeria, in communities in Plateau, Bauchi and Kaduna states. The areas where they live include Bassa, Toro and Saminaka. Jengre, in Pengana District, is one of their settlements and the seat of the region’s ruler, the Ogomo. The Jere language belongs to the Eastern Kainji group, as do the languages of neighboring peoples such as the Buji and the Gusu.

In the traditional organization of the Pengana region, the ruler of each Jere community held the title of Ogomo and had a chief assistant known as the Chope. These titles reflect a communal life with its own leadership and ties to neighboring peoples.
Most Jere follow traditional religions, but a substantial proportion are Christians. Christian work among the Jere began in Jengre in 1931. Even so, many families continue to follow the traditional beliefs of their ancestors.

Training Jere leaders to teach the Scriptures and support Christian families is a priority for prayer. It is also important to support the translation of additional books of the Bible and the use of the people’s language in teaching the faith. Churches need to nurture a respectful witness among relatives and neighbors who continue to follow traditional beliefs.
