People
The Kakwa live in northwestern Uganda, southwestern South Sudan and the northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Uganda, they live mainly in the West Nile region, particularly in Koboko district. They speak Kakwa, an Eastern Nilotic language, and are part of the Karo peoples, along with the Bari. Clans, groups of families with a common ancestry, organize village life, and councils of older men handle disputes. In 1979, after the fall of President Idi Amin, many Kakwa were killed in revenge attacks, while others fled to Sudan. Many later returned to West Nile.

Kakwa families make their living from farming and raising livestock. In Uganda, they grow maize, cassava, pearl millet, sorghum and beans, and raise cattle, goats and sheep. They also engage in small-scale trading, fishing, hunting and crafts. The women are known for their pottery and baskets. In the past, councils of older men had considerable influence over community decisions and clan affairs.
Most Kakwa in Uganda are Christians belonging to various churches. There are also Muslims and followers of traditional beliefs involving ancestors and spiritual forces, with sacred places such as rocks and fig trees. In many communities, the Christian faith coexists with these older beliefs, and biblical teaching has not always taken deep root. Christians therefore need mature teachers who will teach the Scriptures and help them trust in Jesus alone.

Decades of conflict and inadequate public services have weakened education, healthcare and livelihoods in Kakwa communities across the three countries. In Uganda, clean water, healthcare and schools are lacking, and many families go hungry. Kakwa Christians need more solid biblical teaching, with leaders well prepared to teach and support believers.
