The Koviar are a Tamil-speaking community living mainly in northern and eastern Sri Lanka, with a strong historical presence on the Jaffna Peninsula. Traditionally integrated into local agrarian structures and community life, they play important roles in farming and community services. Their identity is deeply rooted in Tamil culture and networks of family solidarity. Over recent decades, they have faced the impact of civil conflicts and socioeconomic changes, seeking to protect their customs while opening pathways to education and employment for younger generations.

Daily life among the Koviar has traditionally centered on agriculture, working the land, and growing rice and vegetables. Families maintain strong community ties, with rites of passage such as weddings, along with local celebrations, strengthening mutual support among clans. Their simple cuisine of rice, fish curry, and local spices reflects the rich Tamil cultural heritage that nourishes daily life in their villages.
Most Koviar practice Tamil folk Hinduism, actively participating in festivals at temples dedicated to village guardian deities. Their daily rituals involve offerings, prayers at household shrines, and respect for ancestral customs. At the same time, there is a longstanding Christian minority in the region, allowing closer contact with faith in Jesus.

After years of instability and material losses in the north of the island, the Koviar need economic recovery, access to better schools, and quality medical care. Spiritually, they need ongoing discipleship and faith communities that help them grow in their knowledge of the gospel with love and without social divisions.
