Who they are
The Kui Kuvi are an indigenous community living in the hills and forests of eastern India, mainly in the state of Odisha. Known for their deep ties to the land and the forests of the Eastern Ghats, they preserve a rich cultural heritage and oral traditions passed down through generations. Although many use Odia in trade and public life, they maintain their distinct tribal identity and strong community values. Life revolves around their villages, where mutual cooperation sustains families amid remote, mountainous terrain.

How they live
Most of the people live in rural villages on mountain slopes. Their livelihoods depend on subsistence farming, growing rice and millet, and gathering forest products such as leaves, fruit, and wood. Community decisions are made by councils of elders, who preserve harmony and local customs. Seasonal festivals marking planting and harvest bring families together for traditional dances, simple feasts, and celebrations filled with music.

Traditional spirituality is marked by respect for the land and ancestral spirits, with the aim of seeking protection and good harvests. Many of these practices blend with the region’s folk Hindu customs. There is also a substantial Christian community among them, creating a setting where evangelical faith exists alongside ancestral tribal rites and beliefs in daily life.
