People
The Kumukio live in villages in Tewai-Siassi District, Morobe Province, in an area of rugged terrain on the Huon Peninsula. Daily family life revolves around subsistence farming, coffee growing, and gathering seafood, resources essential to the villages’ livelihoods. All generations actively use the Kumukio language at home and in community life, keeping their identity and spirit of cooperation alive. Travel to nearby towns involves poor roads and difficult sea crossings, continually calling on the residents’ resilience.
