People
The Kwala, also called Likouala or Ekwala, live in the Cuvette region in the northern Republic of the Congo, along the lower reaches of the Likouala-Mossaka, Sangha and Likouala-aux-Herbes rivers. They speak Likwala and are among the Bantu peoples of central Congo. They are a people closely tied to the rivers: village life revolves around water, fishing and boats.

Kwala families fish, trade and build boats, and also grow cassava, maize and plantains. Villages are built on higher ground to avoid flooding. The extended family, which includes relatives beyond parents and children, plays a central role in community life.
Most Kwala identify as Christian, including Catholics, Protestants and members of independent churches. A smaller portion follows traditional religions. Beliefs about spirits, ancestors and healing still carry weight in the lives of many families.

The Bible has not yet been translated into Likwala, and access to the Scriptures and other materials in the people’s language is limited. Kwala Christians need ongoing biblical teaching and people from their own community who are trained to teach and support others in their faith. Bible study and Christian training materials in Likwala are lacking.
