People
The Orizaba Nahuatl are an Indigenous people descended from the ancient Aztecs, inhabiting the mountain slopes and valleys around the Orizaba region and the Sierra de Zongolica in Mexico. They proudly preserve their variety of the Nahuatl language, spoken at home and in local markets, keeping a rich Mesoamerican cultural heritage alive.
Their identity is deeply tied to the land and community life. Despite the growing influence of Hispanic culture and the Spanish language, they continue to pass on their oral traditions, textile techniques, and ancestral customs to new generations.

Daily life in the villages revolves around subsistence farming, with the traditional cultivation of corn, beans, squash, and coffee on steep slopes. Collective work and mutual assistance among neighbors and relatives sustain the community during planting and harvest seasons.
Wool weaving and handicraft production remain vital cultural expressions. Families value hospitality and celebrate community festivals featuring traditional dishes made with corn and local chili peppers.
The vast majority profess Catholicism, which in practice is closely connected to customs and rites inherited from pre-Hispanic times. Veneration of patron saints and religious festivals blend with petitions for good harvests and protection of the land.
Fear of nature spirits and spiritual illnesses still influences daily life, often making faith a search for protection from invisible forces.

Mountain communities often face geographical isolation, a shortage of basic healthcare services, and a lack of schools offering quality bilingual education. Spiritually, there is a need for in-depth discipleship that enables people to clearly discern the truths of the gospel in their mother tongue.
