The Luyana Kwangali are a Bantu people who live mainly along the fertile banks of the Okavango River, in the region between northern Namibia and southern Angola. Their identity is deeply connected to the river’s waters and traditional community life. They preserve ancestral customs of family cooperation and a rich oral tradition, expressed in the Kwangali language, which strengthens kinship ties and everyday relationships among the region’s villages.

How they live
Family routines revolve around the Okavango River. Small-scale fishing, growing corn and millet, and raising cattle provide their daily livelihood. Villages are organized under the leadership of respected elders and traditional authorities. Working together during planting and harvest seasons is a central value, with neighbors gathering to support one another and share food.
What they believe
The vast majority identify with the Christian faith, a result of decades of missionary presence in the region. However, traditional animist beliefs and reverence for ancestral spirits remain part of everyday life. Many seek protection against witchcraft and illness through ancient rituals, combining ancestral practices with participation in local churches.
