People
Who they are
The Matagalpa are an indigenous people native to the central mountains of Nicaragua. Although they adopted Spanish after their ancestral language died out, they preserve a strong communal identity and agricultural traditions, and continue their struggle for ownership of their communal lands, keeping the memory of their ancestors alive in rural areas.
