The Mjuniang, locally known as Cao Miao, inhabit the mountainous regions of southern China. Although classified under the Miao nationality, they maintain a distinct identity and their own language. Their culture is characterized by communal rice cultivation, a strong attachment to oral traditions, and a profound reverence for nature and their ancestors, which shape daily life in the villages.
