Who they are

The Naga Ponyo-Gongwang live in about 30 villages in Lahe Township, in the Sagaing Region of Myanmar, near India. The name brings together two mutually intelligible dialects, Ponyo and Gongwang, but the two tribes maintain their own identities. The Ponyo began converting to Christianity in the 1970s, and today most identify as Christian, while other families follow traditional beliefs or Buddhism. Many older people understand little Burmese, the language of the Bibles in use.
