Who they are

Peruvians form a diverse nation with a rich cultural heritage, shaped by the encounter between ancient Andean civilizations and Spanish colonization. Spread across the arid coast, the Andes, and the vast forests of the Amazon basin, they share a strong sense of national identity and creativity.

Spanish is the language that unites most of society, serving as a means of communication in commerce, education, and public institutions. At the same time, Indigenous cultural elements remain present in everyday life, music, and cuisine, revealing this people’s ability to preserve their historical roots while modernizing.

History and origin

Peruvian territory was the birthplace of sophisticated ancient civilizations, including the Caral, Chavín, and Moche cultures and the formidable Inca Empire, which ruled vast regions of South America. The Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century established the Viceroyalty of Peru, making Lima one of the Spanish Crown's most influential political and commercial centers on the continent.

After independence in the early nineteenth century, the nation faced periods of political instability, internal social tensions, and armed conflicts in the final decades of the twentieth century. Despite these historical challenges, Peruvian society rebuilt its institutions and preserved a strong sense of resilience and national unity.

How they live

Everyday life varies by geographic region. In coastal cities, the economy centers on industry, commerce, and services, while in mountainous and rural areas many people rely on family farming, growing potatoes and corn and raising llamas and alpacas. Peruvian cuisine is celebrated worldwide, and family lunch is one of the most cherished moments of the day.

The extended family plays a fundamental role in social protection and community support, with strong bonds of solidarity among relatives and neighbors. Community festivals and civic and religious celebrations bring entire generations together in colorful dances and shared feasts, demonstrating the hospitality and perseverance that characterize the people’s life.

What they believe

The vast majority of Peruvians profess the Christian faith, with a historical predominance of the Roman Catholic tradition, evident in historic cathedrals, religious brotherhoods, and annual festivities dedicated to patron saints. In Andean regions, however, these practices often blend with ancestral beliefs in earth spirits and offerings dedicated to Pachamama in search of blessings and protection.

Over recent decades, evangelical churches have grown steadily in working-class neighborhoods and urban centers. For many Peruvians, evangelical faith has brought freedom from alcoholism, restored homes, and a new sense of purpose through the gospel of grace and fellowship with other believers.

Language and the Bible

The complete Bible is available in Spanish in countless modern translations, in print, digital, and audio formats. Churches have extensive literature, Bible schools, and radio and television programs that share the gospel message daily. The current challenge is to encourage ongoing, thoughtful study of Scripture so that the Word of God shapes everyday ethics and fosters mature, transformative discipleship.

Barriers to the gospel

The main spiritual barrier in Peru is religious traditionalism combined with nominal faith. Many people regard their religious heritage as a matter of birth and family loyalty, creating resistance to the idea of personal conversion to Christ. Syncretism with ancestral spiritual practices also still keeps many communities bound by fear and mysticism, while in major cities secularism and attachment to material possessions weaken a sincere pursuit of God.

Needs

Economic disparities between coastal urban regions and communities in the Andean interior still create gaps in basic healthcare, sanitation, and quality education. There is also a need to combat corruption and strengthen social stability to ensure a dignified future for coming generations.

Spiritually, local churches need solid biblical training for their leaders to avoid theological distortions and promote a Christian faith that produces integrity, community reconciliation, and a commitment to mission in neighboring and distant nations.
