Who they are
The Senji belong to the wider family of Shona peoples, concentrated mainly in southeastern Africa, in areas connected to the Save River basin and the coastal plains. They share strong cultural and linguistic ties with the Ndau-speaking community, preserving ancestral traditions passed down through generations.
Their identity is marked by deep respect for family lineages and ancestral land. A sense of community shapes the rhythms of social life and strengthens the group’s cohesion in the face of the region’s historical and climatic challenges.

How they live
Daily life revolves around subsistence farming, growing corn, cassava, beans, and sorghum, as well as raising goats and poultry. Families live in traditional villages where elders exercise considerable authority in resolving local disputes and preserving customs.
Mutual cooperation is evident in preparing fields and holding community ceremonies, where drumming and storytelling keep the clan’s memory alive.
What they believe
Traditional religions deeply shape the Senji worldview. Worship of ancestral spirits is central to family protection, soil fertility, and the healing of illnesses, creating great fear of displeasing the ancestors.
Although some of the population professes Christian faith, many practices are strongly influenced by syncretism involving rituals of spiritual mediation and consultations with traditional healers.
