People
The Talaud inhabit the archipelago of the same name in the far north of Indonesia, near Philippine territorial waters. As an island and seafaring people, they have a strong sense of community identity and preserve rich cultural traditions expressed in their own language, folk songs, and traditional dances connected to life on the ocean and the land.

Daily life among the Talaud revolves around small-scale fishing and subsistence farming. Growing cassava, yams, cloves, and nutmeg, along with copra production, provides a livelihood for many families. Mutual cooperation is a central value in the villages, where relatives and neighbors frequently come together to build boats, prepare fields, and celebrate community festivals.
Most of the population identifies with Christianity, a legacy of missionary activity that began in past centuries. Protestant congregations are a vital part of public life on the islands, although traditional animist beliefs persist in many communities, including fear of ancestral spirits and protective rituals associated with fishing and crops.

The archipelago’s geographic isolation creates challenges in infrastructure, quality medical care, and educational opportunities for young people. Spiritually, there is a need for ongoing discipleship and accessible theological training to support local leadership, enabling congregations to grow in biblical maturity and vibrant faith.
