There are Christian communities among the Tikar of Cameroon, alongside families who follow traditional beliefs. The Twumwu, one of the Tikar groups, live in the Grassfields region, where there are many local kingdoms, each with its own customs, leadership, and identity.
The Tikar have their own language and traditions passed down through the generations. The Twumwu recount that their ancestors migrated to the region many generations ago, before establishing the chiefdoms that still guide community life.

Farming supports most Tikar families. Cassava, corn, bananas, coffee, and cocoa are among their crops, and families take part in local markets and small-scale trade. The planting seasons set the rhythm of life. Relatives across several generations help one another, and traditional chiefs remain important. The Tikar are known for their carved masks, and music, stories, and celebrations preserve the people’s memory.
Most identify as Christians, but traditional beliefs still influence some families. Customs connected to ancestors, ceremonies, and the search for spiritual protection may continue alongside Christian worship. Traditional Tikar religion recognizes a Creator, and many need deeper Bible teaching to know God through Jesus.

The Tikar need mature Christian leaders who teach the Bible faithfully and support believers within their own culture. Faith grows stronger when it rests on the Word of God and not only on family heritage. Communities also need educational opportunities and stable livelihoods.
