Who they are

The Ujia are a traditional community living primarily in the state of Odisha, in eastern India. Embedded in the Dalit sociocultural context, they communicate in the Odia language and preserve their customs in small rural villages. Historically dedicated to artisanal river fishing and fish selling, they supplement their livelihood with manual labor and maintain their identity shaped by Hindu religious traditions and community bonds.
