The Valmiki Balmiki Mehtar live in India, mainly in Gujarat, with communities also in Uttarakhand, Assam and Chhattisgarh. Gujarati is the most widely spoken language among them, but there are also speakers of Hindi, Assamese and Garhwali. In Gujarat, the names Balmiki, Mehtar and Valmiki appear together on the official list of Scheduled Castes. Almost all identify as Christians.
