Who they are

The Vemgo-Mabas live in northeastern Nigeria, in Borno and Adamawa states, and in the far north of Cameroon. Their language has two varieties, Vemgo and Mabas. Historically, they took refuge in the hills to resist the Islamic wars of the Fulani, and most are farmers who grow peanuts, corn and millet on hillside terraces. Islam predominates, but there are followers of traditional religions and a Christian minority in both countries.
