The Western Cakchiquel are one of the principal Maya peoples of the Guatemalan highlands. With a vibrant ancestral heritage, they preserve centuries-old customs, their mother tongue, and a strong connection to the mountains and valleys where they live. Their identity is shaped by communal work, handwoven textiles with traditional geometric patterns, and dedication to the land, all of which express the richness and resilience of their cultural history.

Daily life in the villages revolves around subsistence farming, mainly growing corn, beans, and vegetables on the fertile slopes. Families maintain strong community bonds, working together during planting and harvest. Women are skilled at traditional weaving on backstrap looms, creating colorful clothing that identifies each village. Local open-air markets are the economic and social heart of the communities.
The vast majority of the population profess Christianity, belonging to the Catholic faith and growing evangelical denominations. However, elements of the traditional Maya worldview remain present in many villages, with altars and rituals dedicated to nature spirits and ancestors. The central challenge is to deepen biblical understanding to overcome syncretic practices and bring living hope to homes.

Many families face economic hardship, a lack of access to basic sanitation, and inadequate healthcare services in the mountainous areas. Spiritually, although there are churches in the region, there is a great need for consistent biblical teaching in the Kaqchikel language that speaks to the local context, so that faith can transform community life and overcome historical social divisions.
