Who they are

The Yem are an indigenous people living on the fertile slopes and mountainous valleys of southwestern Ethiopia, near the Gibe River basin. Belonging to the Omotic linguistic family, they diligently preserve the Yemsa language and a distinct communal identity. Historically organized under an independent traditional kingdom, the Yem take great pride in their cultural heritage, which is expressed through community songs, councils of elders, and bonds of solidarity uniting entire villages.

How they live

Yem life centers on farming and the cultivation of enset, the traditional Ethiopian false banana, as well as grains such as barley and teff. They raise livestock and produce coffee on small family plots. Daily life is shaped by communal cooperation during planting and harvest seasons. Elders hold an essential role in resolving local disputes and preserving the collective memory of the community.

What they believe

The majority of the Yem population professes Christianity, primarily divided between the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition and evangelical communities that have expanded in recent decades. A segment of the population adheres to Islam. Elements of ancestral animist beliefs and reverent veneration of spirits continue to exert influence during crises and in the daily customs of several families.

Needs

Yem communities face significant deficits in basic infrastructure, access roads, and healthcare services in remote villages. Spiritually, there is a profound need for trained leadership, deep discipleship, and Christian resources in the Yemsa language, so that faith in Christ may yield lasting fruit of righteousness, integrity, and transformation throughout society.
