Bethlehem

Meaning
The name Bethlehem comes from the Hebrew Bet Lechem, house of bread. Also called Ephrath or Bethlehem of Judah to distinguish it from another town of the same name in Galilee, this small town in the hill country of Judah became known as the birthplace of King David and the birthplace of Jesus, the Messiah announced by the prophets.
About the place

Bethlehem lies in the hill country of Judah, about ten kilometers south of Jerusalem. Small and of little political importance, its name appears in decisive episodes of biblical history.

It was there that Ruth, the Moabite, settled with her mother-in-law Naomi and married Boaz, becoming the great-grandmother of King David. It was also in Bethlehem that the young shepherd David, son of Jesse, was anointed king by Samuel, chosen by God while men still looked at outward appearance.

Centuries later, the prophet Micah announced that from there would come the eternal ruler of Israel, whose origins were from ancient times. The prophecy was fulfilled when Joseph and Mary, compelled by a Roman census, traveled to Bethlehem, and there Jesus was born, wrapped in cloths and laid in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn.

Shepherds in the fields nearby were the first to hear the angels’ announcement, and wise men from the east crossed a great distance to worship the child as king. Bethlehem shows that God tends to choose small and forgotten places to accomplish his greatest purposes.

The place today
The place today

The biblical Bethlehem corresponds to the modern city of the same name in the West Bank, about six miles (ten kilometers) south of Jerusalem. Since the Oslo Accords of the 1990s, the city has been under the administration of the Palestinian Authority, in a territory whose final sovereignty is still disputed between Israelis and Palestinians.

At the traditional site of Jesus' birth stands the Church of the Nativity, one of the oldest Christian churches in the world, visited every year by pilgrims. Today the city's population is mostly Muslim, with a historic Christian community that is steadily shrinking.

Pray for the Palestinian people of Bethlehem, for lasting peace in the region, and for a local church strengthened in the midst of political tensions.
