Israel, in the Lower Galilee region (exact location uncertain)

Cana

Meaning
The name Cana likely derives from the Hebrew Qanah and means place of reeds, or rushes. It was there that Jesus performed his first miraculous sign, turning water into wine during a wedding.
About the place

Cana was a small village in Lower Galilee, located near Nazareth, the town where Jesus grew up and lived before beginning his public ministry.

It was there that he performed the first of the miraculous signs recorded in the Gospel of John: he turned water into wine during a wedding celebration, in response to the request of his mother, Mary (John 2:1-11).

The Gospel emphasizes that this sign revealed his glory and led his disciples to believe in him, the beginning of his public work.

Shortly afterward, Jesus returned to Cana. There, without traveling to Capernaum, he healed a royal official’s son from a distance simply by his word (John 4:46-54).

The Gospel also records that Nathanael, one of Jesus’ disciples, was from Cana (John 21:2).

Cana was neither a religious nor a political center. It was an ordinary place, of weddings and everyday life, but it was there that Jesus chose to reveal who he was for the first time.

This shows something constant in his ministry: the glory of Jesus did not depend on grand stages. It appeared at simple celebrations, in ordinary families, in everyday requests for help.

The place today

Cana was in Lower Galilee, a region that is now part of Israel. Its exact location is uncertain.

Christian tradition, since at least the 8th century, points to the village of Kafr Kanna, near Nazareth, where churches still commemorate the miracle of the wine.

More recent excavations point to the archaeological site of Khirbet Qana, a few kilometers to the north, as a more likely candidate for biblical Cana, because it contains the remains of a first-century Jewish settlement.

Whatever the precise location, it was on land that now belongs to Israel that Jesus first revealed his glory. Pray for these people, that they may recognize in him the one who turns the ordinary into the extraordinary.
