Mizpah of Gilead

Meaning
Mizpah means "watchtower" or "lookout place," a high point from which the surrounding territory could be observed. The addition "of Gilead" distinguishes this place from other locations called Mizpah in the Bible, such as the one in Benjamin, near Jerusalem. It was there that the leaders of Gilead made Jephthah their commander against the Ammonites.
About the place

Mizpah of Gilead lay in the hill country east of the Jordan River, territory occupied by Israel and contested by the Ammonites. The name means “watchtower,” indicating an observation post.

It is the setting for the story of Jephthah, one of the judges of Israel. Rejected by his half brothers for being the son of a prostitute, he had fled to the land of Tob.

When the Ammonites threatened Gilead, the Israelites gathered at Mizpah. The leaders of the people went to bring back Jephthah and made him head and commander over them all, before the Lord.

Before facing the Ammonites, Jephthah made a rash vow, promising to offer as a burnt offering whatever came out of his house to greet him if he won the battle. It was at Mizpah, his own home, that his daughter came out to meet him, dancing, and the vow was fulfilled in tragic fashion.

The story of Mizpah of Gilead shows how God uses rejected and imperfect people to deliver his people, but also warns against making promises without reflection before the Lord.
