Mount Paran

Meaning
Paran probably comes from a Hebrew term that can mean "caves" or "abundant vegetation," the name of a vast mountainous region in the desert south of Canaan. Mount Paran is mentioned only twice in the Bible, always in the same poetic pairing with Sinai and Seir, as one of the places from which the Lord's glory was revealed to Israel.
About the place

Mount Paran appears in the Bible only in two poetic texts, always alongside Sinai and Seir as one of the places from which the Lord’s glory shines.

It is associated with the wide, arid wilderness of Paran, in the northern Sinai Peninsula, through which the people of Israel passed after leaving Mount Sinai on their way to Canaan.

Moses mentions Mount Paran in the blessing he pronounces over the twelve tribes shortly before he dies, describing how the Lord came to his people from the south, through the mountains of the wilderness.

Centuries later, the prophet Habakkuk takes up the same image in a prayer that celebrates God’s power and faithfulness in the face of danger.

In neither text is the mountain the setting of a narrated event: it functions as a poetic symbol of the path by which God’s glory drew near to his people.
