Ziklag

Meaning
The meaning of the name Ziklag is uncertain, probably of non-Hebrew origin. The city was marked in the Bible as David's refuge on the border with the Philistines and the place where he received news of Saul's death.
About the place

Ziklag was a city at the southernmost edge of Canaan, on the border between the territory of Judah and the land of the Philistines.

The Bible lists it among the cities given to the tribe of Simeon, within Judah’s inheritance, but for a long time it remained under Philistine control.

It was there that David lived for about a year and four months, while fleeing King Saul’s persecution, after receiving the city as a gift from Achish, the Philistine king of Gath.

Ziklag holds one of the most dramatic episodes of David’s life: while he and his soldiers were away, the Amalekites attacked the city, burned everything, and carried off the families as captives.

It was there, amid the grief and rebellion of his own men, that David found strength in the Lord before setting out in pursuit and recovering everything that had been taken.

It was also in Ziklag that David received the news of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, a moment that marked the turning point toward his reign over Israel.

Centuries later, the city was inhabited again by Jews who returned from the Babylonian exile.

Ziklag reminds us that God can turn a place of refuge and defeat into a turning point, and that faith can grow strongest in the hour of deepest anguish.
