Who they are
Afro-Uruguayans are descendants of enslaved Africans who arrived in the Río de la Plata basin and profoundly shaped Uruguay’s cultural identity. Known for the rich tradition of candombe and its drumming, they live mainly in Montevideo and other urban areas. Within a highly secularized society, they preserve their history of resistance and face the challenge of coming to know the transforming hope of the gospel.
