Who they are
The Lodha are a traditional indigenous community in eastern India, concentrated mainly in the forests and plains of West Bengal and neighboring states. Historically known as forest dwellers, they preserve a rich oral tradition and strong community ties. Although many speak Bengali in everyday life, they retain cultural and dialectal features rooted in their tribal ancestry. Over the decades, the group has faced severe social stigma, yet remains committed to preserving its identity while seeking a place and dignity in contemporary society.

How they live
In the past, the Lodha depended on hunting and gathering forest products such as sal leaves, firewood, and medicinal herbs. Today, most work in agriculture as day laborers or small-scale farmers, or as laborers in rural areas. Community life is organized in villages led by councils of elders, who settle disputes and uphold customs. Their seasonal festivals include communal singing, drumming, and dances celebrating agricultural cycles.
What they believe
Lodha religious practice combines folk Hinduism with ancient tribal animist beliefs. They revere gods of the Hindu pantheon and venerate forest deities, ancestral spirits, and village guardians known as Baram and Chandi. Regular rituals and offerings are performed to ward off illness, seek blessings on harvests, and appease the spiritual world, which they regard as active and present.
