What it is
Overview

Eastern Europe comprises 10 countries between Poland and Russia, including Ukraine, Belarus, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova and Bulgaria. It is a region marked by decades of communist regimes that openly repressed religious practice, followed by a reopening of churches from the late 20th century onward.

This history left deep scars: in several of these countries, the Catholic or Orthodox Christian faith remains a strong national identity, but decades of official atheism deprived entire generations of any spiritual experience. The result is a region where religion still structures culture, but few truly practice what they profess.

The figures show the scale of the challenge: only 2% of Eastern Europe’s population is evangelical, the lowest rate among the continent’s major blocs. Of the 212 peoples living in the region, 145 are unreached, a high number reflecting both longstanding ethnic minorities and the spiritual isolation inherited from the communist era. There are already 288 languages with some cataloged biblical translation in the region, but 121 still have no part of Scripture.

Pray for a region that has known repression of faith and now faces the challenge of rebuilding living churches after decades of enforced spiritual silence.
