Emmaus was the destination of two disciples of Jesus on the afternoon of resurrection day. Sad and confused over the Master’s death, they were walking there when a stranger joined them on the journey.
Without the two of them recognizing him, the risen Jesus himself walked alongside them. Beginning with Moses and the prophets, he explained everything the Scriptures said about the Christ.
When they arrived, the disciples urged the visitor to stay with them. It was at the table, as Jesus broke the bread, that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, a moment before he vanished.
Emmaus never appears again in any other biblical account. Even so, it became one of the most remembered places of the Christian faith: the road where discouraged hearts burned again on hearing the Scriptures and recognizing Jesus alive.
