Who they are

The Yabaana are an Indigenous people living in the Rio Negro basin in the northwestern Brazilian Amazon. Over the generations, they have faced intense pressures from contact and cultural assimilation, shifting primarily to Portuguese for everyday communication. Even as their traditional way of life changes, they keep alive the memory of their ancestral roots in the forest and continue to cherish them.
