Arabian Peninsula (mainly Saudi Arabia, with part of the traditional territory also in neighboring countries)

Arabia

Meaning
The name Arabia probably comes from a Semitic root linked to "desert" or "arid land." In the Bible it designates the vast desert region south and east of the Holy Land, a land of caravans, tributary kings and, later, the place where Paul withdrew right after his conversion.
About the place

“Arabia” is not the name of a city or of a single archaeological site, but of a vast desert region south and east of the Holy Land.

The name probably comes from a Semitic root linked to desert or arid land, which fits the landscape of steppes, dunes and oases inhabited by nomadic peoples and trading caravans.

In the Old Testament, Arab kings paid tribute to Solomon and Jehoshaphat, and prophets such as Isaiah and Jeremiah announced judgments against the peoples of the region.

In the New Testament, Arabs were among the peoples present in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost, hearing the gospel in their own language.

The most striking moment, however, is personal: right after his conversion on the road to Damascus, Paul withdrew to Arabia before returning to Damascus and, later, beginning his apostolic ministry.

There, far from the apostles in Jerusalem, he seems to have been prepared alone with God for the mission that would change the world.

The place today
The place today

Biblical Arabia corresponds today to the Arabian Peninsula, a vast territory that mainly includes Saudi Arabia, as well as parts of Yemen, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Jordan.

The exact identification of smaller places mentioned in this context, such as Dedan and Tema, is still debated among scholars, but the desert region itself is well recognized.

Overwhelmingly Muslim, it is one of the regions of the world with the least visible Christian presence. Arabs were among those who heard the gospel on the day of Pentecost: pray that the same will happen among the people of Saudi Arabia today.
