Tyre

Meaning
Tyre means "rock" in Hebrew (Tsor), a reference to the rocky island where the city was founded. It was one of the wealthiest Phoenician cities of antiquity, an ally of David and Solomon, and the target of harsh prophecies against its pride.
About the place

Tyre was one of the leading cities of Phoenicia, built on a rocky island near the coast of what is now Lebanon. Its ships and merchants reached the entire Mediterranean, and its wealth made it a symbol of power.

King Hiram of Tyre was an ally of David and Solomon, supplying cedar wood and craftsmen for the royal palace and for the temple in Jerusalem. God used even a foreign king to serve his purposes.

Despite its prosperity, the prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel announced judgment on Tyre because of its pride and trust in its own riches.

In the New Testament, Jesus, in the region of Tyre, responded to the request of a Gentile woman, healing her daughter and praising her faith. Years later, Paul stopped there on his way to Jerusalem and was welcomed for seven days by the local church, which prayed with him on the beach before his departure.

Tyre reminds us that human wealth and power do not replace genuine faith, and that the gospel reaches even those outside the people of Israel.

Biblical Tyre corresponds to modern Sur in southern Lebanon, about 80 kilometers south of Beirut. The ancient Phoenician island is now part of the mainland, joined by an isthmus that formed from the causeway Alexander the Great built in the 4th century BC.

The archaeological site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, with Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine ruins. Sur remains a living city, with about 60,000 inhabitants and an active fishing harbor.

Pray for Lebanon, a land that once welcomed Jesus and the apostle Paul, that the gospel may continue advancing among its people.
